Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials used in jewellery — far harder than gold, titanium or steel — so a polished tungsten band holds its mirror finish for years of daily wear. It will not scuff on keys, tools or gym equipment the way a softer precious metal does.

Hardness and toughness are different things. Tungsten carbide resists scratching but is brittle, so a sharp, direct impact on concrete or steel can crack it rather than bend it. Pure tungsten is a raw metal and too soft to hold an edge or a polish. Tungsten carbide is tungsten bonded with carbon and a binder, then sintered under heat and pressure into the hard, dense material rings are made from. When a ring is sold as tungsten, it is almost always tungsten carbide.
